Why You Should Not Take Laxatives

Previously I wrote an article about constipation and listed laxatives as one of the ways to relief colonyourself of it. Now I will tell you why you should not take laxatives. Although it is one of the over-the-counter drugs that you can take without consulting your doctor, however it’s delicate to take any drugs that can lead to serious complications. There are many complications that could arise due to laxatives usage. Some of the effects are:

Metabolic complications

Basically, different laxatives may be accompanied with different issues. The notable effects of bisacodyl (one of the active components of laxatives), on metabolism is critical in patients with renal disturbances. The presence of dibasic sodium phosphate in most laxatives may cause severe hypocalcemia, hypophosphatemia, and hypernatremia.

Laxatives with these ingredients may lead to serious complications in patients with renal insufficiency. However, if these active components are removed from the drug, the negative effects will be eliminated. Yet these components cannot removed from most laxatives because they are the active ingredients, and without them the drug will not deliver as expected. So if you think it’s safe to take laxatives the way you want, make sure you know your health status, otherwise you will end up causing more damages to your body.

Gastrointestinal complications

Laxatives abuse is one of the major causes of severe diarrhea. In many cases, the stool becomes watery and contain fecal leukocytes, which is the common effect of laxatives abuse. This may results in mucosal inflammation and cause serious pain.

Again, laxatives abuse can result in abdominal cramping. Unfortunately, once abdominal cramping is indicated, it does not only shows the side effects of laxatives, but signify that there’s underlying gastrointestinal pathology.

There are other side effects of laxatives and most of them can lead to fatal conditions such as chronic diarrhea, and abdominal distention.

Some laxatives also have hidden components which affect the brush border enzymes.

Alternative treatment of constipation

I must agree that every treatment options is accompanied with one or more issues, however some are more effective and less damaging. Apart from laxatives, other methods of treating constipation are: enemas, and diet modification.

Enema bag

Constipation can be relieved by diet modification. Since diet is one of the causes of constipation, it can also be managed by introducing fruits and veggies into the diet. By eating foods rich in dietary fiber, it’s possible to enhance digestion and bowel movement. Additionally, enemas can relief constipation and at the same time detoxify the body.

These methods are the best because they use natural methods to treat constipation, and they are the safest methods available. unlike laxatives, they don’t have any synthetic chemicals.
